How to track your sports bets (and why the spreadsheet stops working)

Picksy · October 24, 2026 · 6 min read

Most bettors think they know their record. Very few do. A few big wins stick in the memory, the slow leak of small losses doesn't, and by the end of a season the honest answer to "am I up?" is a guess. Tracking every bet fixes that, and it's the single habit that separates people who get better from people who just keep betting.

What to record for every bet

Whatever you use, the same handful of fields matter. Miss one and the numbers you care about later can't be worked out.

  • Date and game. Which game, and when it started.
  • League and bet type. Spread, moneyline, total, player prop, parlay, future. This is what lets you see where you actually win.
  • The pick and the odds you got. "Chiefs +2.5 at -110", not just "Chiefs".
  • Stake. In dollars, and in units if you bet a fixed unit (one unit = your standard bet, often 1% of your bankroll).
  • Result and profit. Win, loss or push, and what it paid.
  • The book. Prices differ between sportsbooks; you'll want to know where your edge (or leak) comes from.

The numbers that tell you something

  • Units won or lost. Profit measured in units, so a $20 bettor and a $500 bettor can compare records.
  • ROI. Profit divided by total amount staked. +5% over a few hundred bets is very good; a 60% win rate on -200 favorites can still lose money.
  • Win % with the odds next to it. Win rate alone means little: 52.4% is break-even at -110.
  • Splits by league and bet type. Most people are profitable in one or two places and give it back everywhere else. This is the most useful view a tracker gives you.

Why the spreadsheet stops working

A spreadsheet is a fine start. It breaks down for three reasons: you stop entering bets on bad nights (exactly the ones that matter), parlays and props don't fit in one row, and live bets pile up faster than you can type them. A tracker that fills itself in removes all three.

Tracking your bets on Picksy

  1. Link your sportsbook in Settings → Sportsbooks. Your bets sync in on their own, with the real odds and stake, and each one is marked Verified. Picksy never sees your sportsbook password.
  2. Or import a slip. Upload a screenshot of a bet slip and Picksy reads the bets off it.
  3. Or post a pick by hand from the Board, where every game has the current lines.
  4. Open the Bet Tracker. It shows what you have at risk, what you'd win if every open bet hits, and a live projected net while games are on.
  5. Check Stats on your profile. Record, units, win % and ROI, broken down by league, season, team and bet type. Every pick is graded automatically when the game ends.

Tip: Track everything, including the bets you'd rather forget. A record that leaves out the bad nights is worse than no record, because you'll trust it.
